Franklin Lakes Library's PAWS Therapy Pets Program Comforts Young Readers

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — Furry friends visited the Franklin Lakes Public Library one last time this year for the close of the PAWS Therapy Pets 2015 program on Monday afternoon.

The program gives children an opportunity to read aloud to a trained therapy dog, cat or pet rabbit in order to improve reading and communication skills in a non-judgmental environment.

"Children of any age, mostly kindergarten through grade five, are able to drop in and read their favorite books,” librarian Sara Tobias said. "Children practice their reading skills and benefit from the exposure to public speaking and the calming effect of the friendly pups."

Children participate in programs in schools, libraries and other settings where they can have fun and feel comfortable and confident, despite any disabilities, learning issues or social challenges they may face in their daily lives.

More than 350 PAWS volunteer teams have visited over 150 locations throughout the northeast.

The program will start up again at the library on Mon. Jan. 11.
